How to Sterilize Tweezers

Whether you're dislodging a splinter from under your skin or removing ingrown and stray hairs, it is important to sterilize your tweezers before use to kill germs and prevent infection. You can perform this task at home with things found in your kitchen. While there are several methods of sterilizing instruments, the simplest and most effective is boiling.

Wash your hands well with soap and water. Wash the tweezers with soap and water. Use a paper towel to dry your hands and lay the tweezers on a separate paper towel.

Fill a small cooking pot about halfway with water and drop the tweezers into it. Place a lid over the pot.

Set the pot on the stove and bring the water to a boil and let it boil for at least 15 minutes.

Turn off the burner but leave the lid on the pot. Allow the water to cool completely.

Drain the pot using a cover to keep the tweezers inside. Reach into the pot and grasp the tweezers as far from the tips as is comfortable. Use the tweezers immediately or leave them in the pot until you need them.
