How to Get Rid of Fleas in Your Laundry

Once you locate a flea on your dog or cat, you can bet there are more. These fleas are probably living in your furniture, bedding and other laundry items that have come in contact with your pet. After you treat your pet with flea medication, you need to kill the fleas in your home. You can start with all of your laundry.

Things You'll Need

  • Washing machine
  • 1/2 cup 20 Mule Team Borax
  • 1/2 cup washing soda
  • 1/2 cup liquid castile soap
  • 2 gallons hot water
  • Bucket

Video of the Day

Pour borax, washing soda and castile soap in a large bucket.

Fill the bucket with one gallon of hot water. Stir the ingredients well.

Add another gallon of hot water and stir again. This detergent will kill any fleas in your laundry.

Separate your laundry into darks and lights.

Start your washing machine and set the water temperature to hot.

Pour one cup of the laundry detergent you just made in the washing machine while the water is filling up.

Add one load of laundry.

Switch your laundry from the washing machine to the dryer when the cycle is complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • The laundry detergent recipe will last for more than 10 loads of laundry. This should be enough to wash all of your regular laundry and your bedding. If you don't need that much, you can reduce the recipe by half.
  • If you do not wash your laundry, the fleas will just reinfest your pet---or start biting your ankles.
