DIY Metallic Drop Earrings

Often, the simplest jewelry pieces make the biggest statement. And when you're looking to save some cash on bold accessories, there's always a DIY project to save the day. This earring project is an excellent example. While the Zara inspiration piece is just $16, the handmade version will barely cost you $1 to make. This gives you so much room to experiment and practice your jewelry-making skills. The end result is a glam pair of earrings that can be brought from day to night.

Things You'll Need

  • Metallic spray paint

Step 1

Roll the clay into two 1-inch balls and two 1 1/2-inch balls. You should have a total of four clay balls.

  • Over time, clay may harden if exposed to air. To soften the clay, knead it in between the palms of your hands. The friction and warmth of your hands will help soften the clay.

Step 2

Flatten the clay into an oval shape measuring about 2 inches wide and 3 inches high. You can alternate between the rolling pin and your fingers for this step. Don't worry if the clay is not perfectly flat and even. In fact, an uneven surface will better mimic the look of warped metal.

Step 3

Repeat with a second ball of clay. For the last two pieces, create circles measuring about 3 inches wide.

Step 4

Line the metal cookie sheet with parchment paper. Place the clay on the metal sheet and bake according to the directions on the clay's packaging. Most brands call for 15 minutes at 275 degrees F for every 1/4 inch. However, some brands may have slightly different requirements.

Step 5

Once the clay cools down, add a layer of metallic spray paint.

  • As always, head outside when using spray paint. Work in a well-ventilated area and protect your work surface. It's also best to leave the pieces outside while they dry. Check the spray can's directions for specific drying times and instructions.

Step 6

Once the paint is completely dry, glue one oval to one circle. To follow the original inspiration piece, adhere the oval along the top portion of the circle.

Step 7

Turn the clay pieces over. Glue an earring post to the back of each oval. Leave to dry completely.
