Things You'll Need

  • Faux fur

  • Ruler

  • Pen

  • 1/2-inch elastic

  • Pins

  • Sewing machine or needle and thread

  • Hair gel

Choose long faux fur for the most realistic beard.

Dwarfs in fiction usually have long beards. Make an inexpensive and easy costume bread from faux fur. Finish the costume with pants and a tunic in earth colors, for work or adventuring; or jewel-tone colors, for a formal occasion. A wide leather belt with a pick ax tucked in it is a good accessory for a working dwarf. Accessorize a formal costume with a jeweled belt and an amulet on a heavy golden chain.

Step 1

Draw an 8-inch-by-24-inch rectangle on the back of a piece of faux fur. Round the corners of the rectangle to make an oval.

Step 2

Cut out the oval on the fabric. Cut only the fabric, be careful not to cut the fur.

Step 3

Lay the oval fur side down on a flat surface so that one of the short sides is closest to you. Draw a 1-inch-by-2-inch oval mouth hole 1 inch below the top of the oval.

Step 4

Cut out the mouth hole, again being careful not to cut the fur.

Step 5

Pin a 12-inch piece of 1/2-inch elastic to the beard to make a strap. The ends of the elastic should be even with the mouth hole.

Step 6

Try on the beard and tighten the elastic by moving the pin in the elastic until the beard feels secure. Sew the elastic in place.

Step 7

Part the hair above the mouth hole to make a mustache. Comb the hair of the mustache to the sides. Hold the mustache in place with a little hair gel. Brush the hair below the mouth hole down.
