Watching television under a covered patio is a relaxing way to spend a summer afternoon or evening, when everyone wants to be outdoors. You can luxuriate in the hot tub while watching a movie or keep the kids busy with a show while you cook dinner on the grill. Because the TV is under a covered patio, the unit already has some protection from the elements. With a few additional precautions you can enjoy TV outdoors without worrying about your expensive electronics investment.

Things You'll Need

  • Dehumidifier
  • Outdoor TV cover

Turn the TV so that wind and rain contact is minimized or eliminated under the covered patio. Against the wall of your house is a good choice, because the set will also be close to an electrical outlet.

Plug in a dehumidifier under the covered patio, and empty the collection bucket regularly during muggy summer months. This helps to keep moisture in the air from collecting on and inside the TV.

Place remote controls and media such as DVDs in a cabinet or drawer when they're not in use. This protects them from weather and temperature extremes.

Use a cover designed for outdoor TVs when you are not watching television on the patio. These snug-fitting covers are designed to block moisture and protect the electronics from temperature extremes, as well as UV rays from the sun.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not place a TV anywhere outdoors where it could fall or tip over, such as next to a pool, sauna or hot tub.
