Bed bugs are tiny insects that infest mattresses and feed off of human blood. A sure indication of a bed bug infestation is waking up with small red bite marks all over the body. There are several methods for getting rid of bed bugs, the most common of which is calling a pest control company. However, if the infestation is caught early, the bugs can be killed using a large zip up mattress protector.

Use a tape measure to measure the depth of the mattress. This is the distance between the top of the mattress that is slept on and the bottom that rests against the bed. Measure the depth of the box spring mattress as a separate measurement.
Purchase a mattress cover that zips around the entire mattress. Make sure that the mattress cover packaging states that it fits the depth size of your mattress. If there is a box spring mattress, purchase a separate mattress cover for it as well.
Remove the mattress from the bed and insert it into the mattress cover. Zip the mattress cover completely closed.
Remove the box spring from the bed and insert it into a separate mattress cover. Zip the box spring mattress cover completely closed.
Apply small strips of duct tape to the place where the mattress cover zipper closes. This seals the tiny hole at the end of the zipper and prevents the bed bugs from escaping.
Place the box spring back on the bed and then place the mattress on top of the box spring.
Wait six months, then take the mattresses outside and unzip the mattress covers. Use a vacuum to suck up the dead bed bugs.
Place the mattress covers back on the mattresses and return the mattresses back to the bed. Wait an additional six months and them open the mattress covers again. If no bed bugs are present all the bugs are dead.
