While many products are sold to help with vinyl cleaning, there are several alternative cleaners that can be formulated right at home. These home remedies perform as well as commercial cleaners, while providing many additional benefits such as cost and environmental impact.

There are several different cleaning solutions that can be made right at home to clean vinyl siding. Regular cleaning does not require any special products. Simple home ingredients and cleaning supplies such as laundry detergent and bleach are effective at cleaning most problems that occur with vinyl siding. Mix a solution of 1/3 of a cup of laundry detergent, 1 quart of bleach and 1 gallon of water to clean away dirt and other light stains. A solution of 70 percent water to 30 percent vinegar is an effective fighting agent against mold and mildew.
A cleaning solution is not the only product that is necessary for cleaning vinyl siding. In addition to the cleaning agent a tall ladder, a soft bristle brush with a long handle and a garden hose. Protective gloves and eyewear should also be worn when working with cleaning products. A pressure washer is not necessary to clean dirt from the siding. In some cases the pressure washer may even damage the surrounding objects such as windows and doorways.
Vinyl siding should be cleaned once or twice a year. This prevents the dirt and other contaminants from building up on the surface of the walls. This also keeps the vinyl looking crisp and new. The longer time period between washings, the harder it is to remove the dirt from the siding. If several years have gone by since the last cleaning, then a home remedy may not be strong enough to effectively clean the vinyl.
There are a few problems with home remedies for cleaning vinyl siding. Some stains cannot be removed with a home cleaner, such as caulk, gum, grease, motor oil, pen ink, tar and paint. These substances require a harsher cleaning product.

Home remedies are formulated from products that you already own, saving the expense of purchasing another cleaner. Home remedies are often better for the environment. Natural ingredients, such as water and vinegar are completely environmentally safe, and will not kill plants or cause other environmental harm.
