A time will come when you want to discard a piece of furniture that no friends or family want. You can donate it to a charity organization that will be glad to come to your place of residence to pick it up. Donating furniture also has the added bonus that you can use it as a tax write off under the category of charitable contributions.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army received donations of clothing, furniture, appliances and toys from more than 10 million people in 2009. The Salvation Army has over 2,300 donation drop-off locations in the United States and Canada, but donors also can call to have trucks pick up their items. Proceeds from the sale of items fund adult rehabilitation centers that help drug abusers. The funds also are used to help people who are struggling because of other circumstances such as natural disasters. When people donate items to the Salvation Army, they receive a tax receipt. The Salvation Army is a religious organization that is most visible during the holiday season when it has workers with bells stand outside stores and collect money to provide Christmas meals and help the needy.

Goodwill

According to its website, in 2009 over 66 millions people donated items such as as clothing, appliances, electronics and furniture to the Goodwill. Over 2,400 Goodwill donation locations can be found in the United States and Canada. The sale of the items funds job training programs, helps people find jobs, and supports programs for people with disabilities, or who lack education or job experience. Over 80 percent of its donations are used to fund employment and training programs.

The Goodwill organization dates back to the early part of the 20th century. Furniture donations can be made at its drop-off locations, but it also will send out a truck to most residences or businesses to pick up items.

Vietnam Veterans of America

The main purpose of the Vietnam Veterans of America organization is to help veterans of the military service receive quality health care. Although it stresses that it most wants to collect clothing, it will also pick up items such as furniture, books, toys, bikes, electronic equipment, kitchenware, small appliances, jewelry and rugs. It has service centers in most of the states, but also will pick up items. Donors need to contact the association and then place their items on the curb where a driver can clearly find them. The organization stresses the identification of service-related disabilities and illnesses. It also advocates for legislation to benefit veterans. The VVA sells its donated items through a bidding process with retailers.
