How to Remove Tags from Clothes

Save

Clothing tags are necessary to inform the wearer of sizing and laundering instructions. Unfortunately, some tags may irritate the wearer by itching or poking the skin. If clothing tags irritate, it may be necessary to carefully remove the tags to remove the irritation. Learn how to remove tags from clothes without harming them.

Things You'll Need

  • Scissors
  • Seam ripper
  • Sewing machine

Step 1

Look carefully at the tag to find out how the tag is sewn into the garment; often tags are sewn directly into the seam. If this is the case, the tag will have to be carefully removed and then the seam will need to be restitched without the tag in place.

Step 2

Cut off as much of the tag at the seam line as possible.

Step 3

Use the seam ripper to carefully cut the stitches of the seam that secure the tag into the garment. Do not remove any more stitches than are necessary and do not damage the fabric as you are removing stitches.

Step 4

Pull the remaining tag out of the stitching after the stitches have been removed.

Step 5

Resew the seam over the stitches that you removed to repair the seam line of the garment. Clip any stray threads when finished sewing.

Tip

  • Write down any care instructions before removing the tag if there is something special or technical about how the garment must be cared for.
