Make a paper bonnet that harks back to those worn at the very first Thanksgiving dinner. Paper bonnet hats make cute costumes for Thanksgiving dinners. Your little pilgrims will enjoy this craft and be able to wear their creations on Thanksgiving. These are also great for Thanksgiving or historical plays. The craft can be made in about half an hour with minimal supervision. The paper bonnets can be decorated with markers, crayons and stickers.

Things You'll Need

  • 12-inch-by-18-inch piece of white paper
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Stapler with staples
  • Hole punch
  • Ribbon

Lay the paper on the work surface in front of you in a landscape orientation (horizontally, so that long sides face toward and away from you).

Fold the bottom 1 1/2 inch up on the long side closest to you.

Measure 6 1/4 inches from the top left hand corner along the edge of the side opposite the one you just folded. Make a small mark with the pencil. Measure 1 inch from the first mark (7 1/4 inches from the corner and still along the edge) and make a second mark.

Make a third mark between the two you just measured that is 3 inches from the top edge. The three marks should form a triangle. Cut the triangle out. Repeat for the top right hand corner.

Rotate the paper so that the cut side is facing you. Push the piece between the triangle lines in and bring the corners of the triangles together. Staple these two flaps.

Punch holes in the bottom corners of the folded side. Cut two lengths of ribbon, and tie them through the punched holes. Put the bonnet on, and tie the ribbons under the chin.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can staple the ribbon to the bonnet if you don't have a hole punch.
  • The bonnets are traditionally white, but you can use gift wrap for more decorative pieces.
  • Decorate the bonnets if you wish.
