DIY Embellished Espadrilles

If there's one style of shoes you're going to see every summer, year after year, it is, without a doubt, the espadrille. A quick glance at the variety of styles and options available across most (if not all) retailers is proof enough that this shoe is a favorite summer staple. While it's easy to pick up a new pair, it's even easier (and cheaper!) to add some flair to an old pair and give it a whole new look that feels modern, fun and unique.

I had this old pair of plain white espadrilles and decided to embellish them with some super easy-to-make suede stars and studs that I glued onto them. The result? A pair of like-new espadrilles that I've been wearing non-stop and that you can recreate following these easy and simple steps!

Things You'll Need

  • 1 pair of espadrilles
  • 1 small piece of suede
  • Pen or pencil
  • Glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Pen or marker
  • Studs

  • Instead of buying a big piece of suede, look for suede elbow patches; they are big enough and won't cost you more than $6.

Step 1

Draw the stars on the back side of your suede piece and cut out each one.

  • If you're not good at free-hand drawing, you can use a cookie cutter or trace one from a book or the Internet and use it as a template. You can also use your first star as the template for the rest.

Step 2

Use the glue gun to apply glue on one side of each star.

  • Make sure you cover the whole surface, otherwise the corners will stick up.

Step 3

Firmly press the star onto the shoe for a few seconds until well secured.

Step 4

Using the scissors or a pair of pliers, fold back the prongs of each stud.

Step 5

Glue each stud along the edge of your star using one single drop of glue.

  • Make sure you do it quickly as the glue tends to dry pretty fast.

Step 6

Repeat the same process for the rest of the stars on the other shoe.

Once you're done, you will end up with a pair of espadrilles that not only feel like new, but that are also summer friendly and chic!
