How to Remove Exterior Door Knobs

The doorknob is an important safety feature as most doorknobs have the ability to lock. To repair a broken doorknob fixture or give your door an updated look, you may need to remove your current doorknob. Exterior doorknobs have hidden screws and if you miss a screw, you may be prying the doorknob out too soon, following the proper steps is important to prevent damage to your door.

Loosen the two small screws on the trim on the doorknob to remove it first. The trim is a flat disk that lies between the knob and the door. Once the trim is removed it will reveal two longer screws, each holding one side of the knob together.

Unscrew the screws that are holding the actual knobs together. Once loosened doorknobs will come right off, for stubborn doorknobs you may need to gently be pull them off.

Locate the bolt, which is also called the tongue that holds the door closed. Exterior doors have bolts that are secured with two screws on the doors edge. Using the screwdriver, unscrew those screws and the bolt will then easily slide out of the door.

Remove the two screws that hold the strike plate in place. The strike plate is located on the side of the door and is a think metal piece laid over the hole that holds the latch for a more finished look. Your exterior doorknob is now detached from the door.
