Summer is a great time of year with its warm weather and long evenings. After a long day at work or school, you can still enjoy the summer night before it gets too dark. However, summer can sometimes get boring if you don't know how to spend your time. Fortunately there are many activities for a boring summer night, and most of them are free and require little preparation.

Find a portable telescope or binoculars, or use your own eyes to enjoy the summer night stars. You can even learn about constellations while observing them. For the best clear view of the constellations, escape the city night lights and any trees that obscure your vision. Most likely you will need to leave the city to find a dark, deserted area in the mountains or on a beach.

Sleeping outside is also a fun summer activity. It is usually free, and you typically don't have to travel far to pitch your tent or sleep under the stars. Your backyard can be a great place to enjoy the night stars and morning sunrise. Or if you're feeling adventurous, find a campsite in the mountains or a place to pitch a tent on a beach. Make sure to use insect repellant when sleeping outside, as mosquitos are out in full force on most summer nights.

Another fun activity on a boring summer night is to enjoy an outdoor movie on your laptop or projector screen. If you have a projector, create a projector screen by hanging a large white sheet on a wall. Find a blanket, snuggle up and relax to a movie while enjoying a summer night with crickets.

Outdoor Physical Activities

A stroll in the park can be a fun way to spend a boring summer night. Parks are great because they are generally well-lit and safe. If you get tired of walking, you can sit on a park bench or play on the playground equipment. Consider the beach or a mountain trail for a summer walk if a park is not an option in your area.

Another way to spend a boring summer night is to organize night games with your friends. Tossing a football, ultimate frisbee and soccer are fun night games. If it's too dark to see, purchase a glow-in-the-dark football, frisbee or soccer ball. Or cool off after a long hot day with a water fight. Organize a free-for-all water fight with your friends or family using buckets, balloons and water guns as weaponry.

Indoor Activities

There's nothing like reading a good book indoors on a warm summer night. Sit in a comfortable chair and read a good book next to a window where you can enjoy the view of the night sky and hear the crickets chirp. Sip on lemonade or iced tea, or enjoy some ice cream or watermelon while you read a timeless classic or the latest best seller.

Or gather some friends or family members to enjoy a night of classic board games. Board games will quickly turn a boring summer night into a night of fun. If you don't have any board games, consider playing cards or exchanging stories with the group.

Make a picnic, enjoy good food and wine on a blanket and watch the sun set on a warm summer night. Not only is this relaxing, but it can also be romantic.

Making s'mores is a fun activity for a boring summer night. Toast marshmallows at a campfire or over a barbecue (or even over your kitchen stove – just watch for dripping marshmallows). Line two graham crackers with pieces of a flat chocolate candy bar and then wedge your toasted marshmallow inside. Eat the treat like a sandwich.
