Using Velcro is an inexpensive, quick and easy way to take your cushions to the next level. You can use Velcro to keep the cushion attached to the seat -- particularly useful if you have children -- or as a closure to keep cushions from sliding out of their covers. You can use the same skills to create either type of cushion in just a few minutes.

Velcro to Secure a Cushion to a Seat

Video of the Day

Step 1

Cut two pieces of cloth into the shape -- square, oval, rectangle -- and size of the cushion. Leave an extra half-inch around the edges for the seam allowances. Make sure that the "top" side of both pieces of cloth are facing each other.

Step 2

Sew around the edge of the material by hand or using a sewing machine. Leave a space of about 3 inches open.

Step 3

Use the open space to pull the cushion cover right-side out.

Step 4

Stuff the cushion. Use feathers, foam, cotton or batting until it is as fat as you like.

Step 5

Tuck the ragged edges of the opening inside. Hand-sew the opening closed.

Step 6

Hand-stitch the Velcro strip onto one side of the pillow. Attach the other side of the Velcro to the chair.

Cushion with a Velcro Closure

Step 1

Cut out three pieces of cloth. One should be slightly larger than the size and shape of the cushion you want. The other two pieces should be slightly larger than half of the first piece of cloth. These pieces will be used to leave an opening to remove the cushion. Leave enough extra space to sew the edges down. For example, if you want a circular pillow cover, you would cut out one circle and two half-moon shapes. The half moons should be wider than exactly half of the circle so that you can hem them and attach the Velcro.

Step 2

Lay the two smaller pieces of cloth one on top of the other, alongside the larger piece of cloth. Move them until the two together are the same length as the longer cloth. The two pieces of cloths should meet and have a bit of excess in the middle. Make sure both pieces of cloth have the "top" or nice side facing up.

Step 3

Fold the middle-facing edge of the top cloth under and sew it into place. Then do the same with the bottom piece. Make sure that a bit of the top cloth overhangs the bottom cloth so that when you attach the Velcro it can close easily.

Step 4

Attach the Velcro. Sew one piece of Velcro to the bottom of the top piece of cloth and the other piece to the bottom cloth.

Step 5

Turn the sewn and Velcroed piece over onto the larger piece of cloth. The "front" side of both pieces should be facing and the two sewn pieces should fit together and be the exact size as the larger piece.

Step 6

Sew all the way around the edges of the pressed-together pieces of cloth. Turn the cover inside-out and you will have a cushion cover with a Velcro closure.
