Show your style in boxing trunks that express your individuality. Boxing trunks are quick to make and don't require much fabric. You can create custom boxing shorts in your own unique pattern. You can make nylon shorts that will wash and dry quickly or you can use satin to mimic the look of classic, old-fashioned boxing shorts.
Things You'll Need
Pull-on pajama pattern
Fabric, 1 yard
Wide pajama elastic
Measure from your waist to the desired hem length of your shorts. Add 2 inches to this measurement. Measure this length down from the waistline on the pattern. Fold up the leg of the pattern at this point. Cut along the fold or fold the extra paper out of the way. The waistline will be marked on the pattern.
Pin the pattern pieces on the fabric. Be sure to keep grain lines marked on the pattern parallel to the edges of the fabric. Cut out the fabric pieces.
Wrap the elastic around your waist. Pin it so it fits snugly, but comfortably. Add 1 inch to this measurement and then cut the elastic.
Pin the fronts of the shorts to the backs of the shorts along the side edges, with the right sides of the fabric together. Sew the side seams of the shorts. Reinforce these seams by zigzag stitching in the seam allowances. Some shorts are made in one piece and will not have side seams.
Fold the legs in half and sew the inseams in the same way. Turn one leg right-side-out and insert it in the other leg. Sew the crotch seam and reinforce it as you did the other seams. Finish the top and leg edges by zigzag stitching them.
Turn the shorts wrong-side out. Sew the ends of the elastic strip together. Sew the elastic to the top edge of the shorts, matching the top edges and stretching the elastic to fit. The elastic should be on the inside of the shorts. Fold the elastic down. The fabric will fold over the elastic forming the waist edge of the shorts.
Stretch the elastic as you sew around the top edge of the shorts, 1/2 inch from the top edge. Stitch again 1/2 inch lower on the elastic. Repeat until the fabric is stitched to the elastic all the way down. Sew a 2-inch hem in the legs of the shorts.
