A long sleeping cap to wear with pajamas is a wonderful addition to a specially made pair of pajamas or as a finishing touch to a Scrooge costume for a Christmas play. Use stretchable knit fabric for your long night cap for fit and comfort. Making a long sleeping cap takes minimal sewing skills and uses one simple-to-create pattern piece. Sewing this cap will take less than an hour, making it an easy last-minute project.

Step 1

Measure the head circumference of the person who will be wearing the hat and add an inch. This measurement will be the bottom of your long sleeping cap's pattern.

Step 2

Draw the cap's bottom measurement on the back of some wrapping paper. Measure to find the center of the line and measure up 36 inches. Connect the ends of the bottom line with the top point of the 36-inch middle line. This will form a triangle. This is the pattern for your long sleeping cap. Cut out the pattern.

Step 3

Lay the yard of stretchable fabric on your sewing surface in a single layer. Pin the pattern to the fabric and cut out.

Step 4

Fold the long sides of the fabric triangle together, with the right sides facing each other. Pin the sides together. Sew the pinned edges using a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

Step 5

Fold up the bottom of the sleeping cap 1/2 inch to the wrong side of the fabric. Pin the fold. Sew a zigzag stitch along the pinned edge, creating the hem. The zigzag stitch will allow the brim of the cap to stretch without breaking the thread. Turn the sleeping cap right side out.

Step 6

Cut a 4-inch square of heavy cardboard. Cut a 6-inch length of yarn. Lay it across the center of the cardboard square. Wrap the skein of yarn over the 6-inch piece and around the cardboard 20 times.

Step 7

Bring the ends of the 6-inch yarn together over the wrapped yarn. Cinch the ends and tie in a knot. Turn the cardboard square over and cut the wrapped yarn across the center of the cardboard. This will create a pom-pom for the sleeping cap.

Step 8

Trim the tied ends even with the pom-pom ends. Hand stitch the pom-pom to the point of the sleeping cap.
