How to Make the Tail for a Mouse Costume

  • Fabric scissors

  • Thread

  • Sewing machine

  • Batting

  • Craft wire

  • Safety pins

Animal costumes are a popular choice among children at Halloween. Mouse costumes often are among the more popular of the animal costumes. Whether you purchase a mouse costume in a store or make it at home, tail construction can come into play. With basic sewing skills and some common craft supplies, practically anyone can make a tail for a mouse costume.

Step 1

Cut out two ovals of felt that are each 3 inches wide and 26 inches long. Lay them directly on top of each other.

Step 2

Sew the felt pieces together all the way around, leaving one of the shorter ends open. Turn the tail right-side out.

Step 3

Stuff the tail with batting until it is completely full.

Step 4

Cut a piece of craft wire that is 22 inches long. Curve it at the ends and insert it into the tail through the batting.

Step 5

Sew the opening in the tail closed. Curve the tail upward slightly and safety pin it onto the back of the mouse costume.

Tip

Any other neutral felt color can be used rather than gray.

For a more permanent solution, the tail can be attached to the costume with hot glue instead of safety pins.
