A rose petal drop can serve as an alternative to using a flower girl.

A rose petal drop at your wedding ceremony lends a romantic touch to your special day; however, you first need to check with your wedding venue to make sure you are allowed to create a drop for your ceremony. Some locations have rules against scattering flower petals or attaching items to the ceiling. To create a rose petal drop, you need to attach a net to the ceiling temporarily to hold the petals until it is time for the drop.

Step 1

Tack one end of the netting to the ceiling toward the back of the room. Make sure the center of the netting will be over the aisle.

Step 2

Attach the other end of the netting to the ceiling with tape so it can easily become detached at the proper moment.

Step 3

Cut pieces of string that are long enough to reach from one edge of the netting down to a height where someone standing on the floor can pull on it. If you will use one person to release the drop, you only need one string.

Step 4

Tie the string to the net near the taped edge because this is the edge that will detach to release the rose petals. Position the string so your release person can easily reach it at the right time.

Step 5

Fill the netting with rose petals. Fake rose petals are best for a drop because they will not dry out and harden like real petals do.

Step 6

Pull the string to release the taped end of the netting and the rose petals will drop.

Tip

If you can't use tacks in your venue, use tape on both sides; however, you must be careful not to pull the whole net down when you pull the string.
