Pendants hang in the center of a necklace.

A pendant is the centerpiece in different necklace designs. It normally consists of a large bead or hanging feature. Depending on the style of necklace you are making, there are different knots that you can use to attach a pendant to a leather cord. The best knot depends on how the pendant is going to hang on the necklace. If you are using beads, you should ensure that the hole in the beads is big enough for the leather cord to fit through.

Overhand Knot

Video of the Day

The overhand knot is a simple knot, and can be used to secure a hanging pendant in the center of a necklace so that it does not slide around. Thread the pendant onto the leather cord and position it in the center of the cord. Make a loop in the cord on one side of the pendant. Pass the loose end of that side into the loop and pull the knot tight. Repeat this on the cord on the other side of the pendant to secure it in place.

Bowline Knot

The bowline knot creates a loop on the leather cord from which you can hang the pendant. Thread the pendant onto the leather cord and position it in the center of the cord. Make a loop in the cord to one side of the pendant. Pass the loose end of the cord from the other side of the pendant through the loop, around the neck and back into the loop. Pull the knot tight to secure the pendant in place.

Looping Knot

This is suitable for pendants with a hole in the front. Make a fold in the center of the leather cord. Feed the fold through the back of the hole in the pendant. Pull the loop over the end of the pendant and round the back. Pull the two ends of the leather cord tight to secure the pendant on the cord.

Pendant Hitch

This is ideal for attaching a stone to a necklace without additional support. Make a loop in the center of a leather cord. Wrap the right end of the leather cord around the left, weaving it under and then under again. Pass the end downward under the loop created in the thong and the original loop. Pass the left end of the thong over the original loop and through the created loop. Wrap the left end around the right weaving it under then under again. Pass the end downward under the loop created in the thong and the original loop. Make a small cut on the inside edge of the loop when the stone will be set. Insert the stone in the loop and pull the knot tight. Use shoemaker's glue to strengthen the hold.
