Things You'll Need

  • Fabric stiffener

  • Shallow bowl

  • Yarn

  • Scissors

  • Plastic flexible cutting mat

Add stiffness to yarn before you use it for a project.

Yarn might contain a variety of different textiles, including acrylic and cotton. When you need yarn for a crafting project, transform the yarn into the textures you need with simple ingredients. Use a liquid fabric stiffener to make yarn stiff. The fabric stiffener dries clear on the yarn, surrounding it with an effective and invisible stiff layer to enable you to create your project.

Step 1

Pour about 1 inch of fabric stiffener into the shallow bowl. Cut a length yarn to the length you require for your project.

Step 2

Place the yarn into the fabric stiffener, pushing it down into the stiffener with your fingers to coat it thoroughly.

Step 3

Lift the yarn out of the fabric stiffener. Pinch the yarn at one end with your index finger and thumb. Holding the yarn above the bowl, move your fingers down the yarn to remove the excess fabric stiffener from the yarn. The fabric stiffener will drip off the yarn into the bowl.

Step 4

Place the wet yarn onto the plastic cutting mat. Position it in the shape you desire or simply lay it straight onto the cutting board to dry. Allow the yarn to dry completely.

Step 5

Use the yarn as you desire for your project. The yarn will be stiff, yet still flexible enough to cut and manipulate.

Tip

Repeat the steps a second time to stiffen the yarn more, if necessary.
