A Russian hat, called an ushanka, is an instantly recognizable traditional Russian accessory. If you're visiting Russia or going to a costume party, you may want to wear your own ushanka, which means "ear flap" in Russian. You can make this hat yourself at home using a pattern you make yourself, which will save money over buying a pre-made hat at a department store or specialty shop, where similar items can sometimes be costly.
Step 1
Measure the diameter of your head with a measuring tape. Write down this measurement and save it to use when determining the size of the hat you make.

Step 2
Draw a pattern onto a piece of tissue paper, or newspaper as an alternative. Draw one rectangle that is the same length as the measurement you took of your head and is about four inches wide, plus one inches for seam allowance. This will be the rim of the hat. Draw an oval that is the same diameter as the measurement you took of your head plus one inch for seam allowance. And draw two squares that are about 2 inches by 4 inches with rounded corners on the bottom to act as the ear flaps.
Step 3
Cut out each pattern piece from the tissue paper and attach them to a piece of faux fabric cloth using straight pins.
Step 4
Cut out the fabric pieces using the tissue paper pattern as a guide, then remove all of the straight pins.
Step 5
Sew the two ends of the rectangle piece of fabric together so you have a loop. Sew the oval piece to the top of the loop so you have a basic hat shape that fits snugly over your head.
Step 6
Sew one ear flap on either side of the hat where your ears would be.
Tip
Sew a hem around the edges of the hat if there are any frayed edges.
