Use palm leaves to create a hat

You can create many craft projects with palm leaves, including fashionable hats and accessories. Using an old hat as a base, you can create a new hat using palm leaves to decorate it. Palm leaf hats are ideal for keeping the sun rays out of your face or to create a personalized tropical straw hat. The palm leaf hat can be personalized by creating a simple design or by braiding the palm leaves.

Step 2

Take the old hat that will be used as a base for the palm leaf hat and place it on a flat surface.

Step 3

Glue the leaves onto the hat, creating a personalized design. Apply glue to the backside of the leaves when attaching them to the hat.

Step 4

Add enough palm leaves so the ends of the leaves overlap. Ensure that the entire hat is covered. Add several layers of the palm leaves for a sturdy hat, if desired.

Step 5

Cut off the leaves that extend beyond the hat's brim, using the edge of the brim as a guide.

Step 6

Cut a long piece of twine and wrap it around the hat, so it falls into the crease where the hat and the brim meet. Glue it in place and tie a bow using the ends of the twine. Ensure the bow is in the front of the hat.

Step 7

Let the hat dry completely before use. While it may look dry on the outside, it could take several hours until the glue has dried between the leaves and the hat. Leave the hat to dry overnight, if unsure.
