Cheerleading pom-poms made with plastic bags give a satisfying rattle when they are shaken. They create a bright, visual display that draws the eye, and home-made pom-poms are ideal for would-be cheerleaders to practice with at home. Made from plastic grocery bags, they are also an ideal recycling project, and make good use of something that would otherwise end up in landfill.
Things You'll Need
10 plastic grocery bags
Layer the plastic bags on a flat surface. Cut the handles off, and cut off the bottom seam of the bags.
Measure the cut bags lengthwise with a tape measure, measuring from one cut end to the other. Make a mark exactly halfway along the bags.
Cut 1/2-inch strips into the bags at both ends, so you make a fringe on both ends of the bags. Stop fringing 1-inch from either side of the marked central place, so you end up with a 2-inch strip in the center of the bag with long fringes on either side.
Roll the bags into a sausage shape with the fringes on either end, then wrap electrical tape around the center portion to secure the bags and create a handle.
Scrunch each of the fringed ends to fluff out the pom-poms, and give the pom-pom a good shake to separate the plastic strands.
Make smaller pom-poms by using fewer plastic bags and cutting off more length from either end of the bag. You can also make the pom-poms less fluffy by snipping off some of the strands or by cutting the strands wider before rolling the bags.
Layer the plastic bags in alternating colors to get an even mix of color through multicolored pom-poms.
