House flies have dark bodies and silvery wings.

If your child has to dress up as a fly for a costume party or theater production you will need to assemble a few basic items to create an effective costume. A fly outfit also makes an interesting and unusual choice for Halloween, and would work well for a couples costume if accompanied by a spider.

Step 1

Wear black pantyhose or leggings and an oversized black hooded sweatshirt as a base for this costume. Pad out the kid's sweat shirt by strapping a light blanket or thin quilt around his chest under the sweat shirt.

Step 2

Pull the hood up to cover the head. Make large composite fly eyes by cutting out pointed ovals of gray craft foam and attaching them to either side of the hood with fabric glue.

Step 3

Make fly wings by bending two wire coat hangers into the shape of teardrops. Cut the legs from the white or light-colored pantyhose and stretch one leg of the pantyhose over each hanger. Fix it in position with safety pins or fabric glue. Draw on vein details with the black marker pen.

Step 4

Join the wings with duct tape to cover any loose ends of wire so they won't poke the child. Attach ribbons to the rear of each wing to tie them around the shoulders.

Step 5

Use black gloves and black shoes to complete the outfit.
