Revolutionary War hats can be created using newspaper and tape. Making this hat is just one way to keep children engaged while learning about American History. You can use the hats to help talk to children about the Revolutionary War and the hardships that people faced during the time period. Children can act out scenes from the war once the hats are complete and pretend to perform tasks that would be common occurrences during this time frame.
Things You'll Need
1/2 sheet of newspaper
Lay the newspaper flat on a surface so you can work with it and create the Revolutionary War hat. The newspaper should look as if you are about to read it. The top of the newspaper will be the first paragraph and the headline on the newspaper. Fold the newspaper in half and press your finger along the fold to form a crease.
Arrange the newspaper so the folded crease is the top of the newspaper and the bottom of the paper is the two folded ends pressed together. Use a pencil to mark where the middle of the newspaper is on the bottom part of the paper.
Place the hat so that the top is facing away from you and the bottom part of the newspaper that you marked is facing toward you. Fold down the left corner of the newspaper until it meets the bottom middle point of the newspaper. Press down on the folded newspaper with your finger to create a crease.
Fold down the right corner of the newspaper until it meets the bottom middle point of the newspaper. Press the fold down to make a crease. The newspaper will look like a triangle at this point.
Fold one side of the bottom of the newspaper up about 1/2 an inch and press down on the newspaper. Fold the other side of the bottom of the newspaper up about 1/2 an inch and press down on the newspaper with your finger. This will create a rim for your hat.
Add tape to any sections of the Revolutionary War hat that need extra support to stay together. This can include the "rim" of the hat or the area where the triangle was folded down.
