How to Crochet a Cowgirl Outfit

Things You'll Need

  • 4 3.5 oz skeins worsted weight yarn

  • Size H crochet hook

  • 1 yard wire edge ribbon

  • Tapestry needle

  • Waistband elastic

Put some giddyup in your little girl's dress-up time with a crocheted cowgirl outfit. You can work up the pattern for the crocheted cowboy hat, vest and skirt quickly in single and double crochet. This outfit will turn your little princess into a charming buckaroo.

Crocheted Cowboy Hat

Step 1

Starting at the inner edge of the brim, make a chain long enough to fit around the child's head. Slip stitch (sl) in first chain (ch) to form ring. Single crochet (sc) in each ch. Sl in first sc to join. Work 16 rounds, increasing evenly across each round to keep work flat.

Step 2

Working in back loop of each sc for this round only, sc in each sc. Work 16 rounds of sc, decreasing evenly in each row to match top half of brim.

Step 3

Working in front loop for this round only, sc in each sc. Sl into first sc in round. Ch 1. Sc in each sc for 24 rounds, until crown measures 6 inches.

Step 4

Working on wrong side of hat, fold crown in half. Stitch seam closed. Break yarn and weave in end.

Step 5

Cut a piece of wire edge ribbon the circumference of the outer edge of hat brim. Fold ribbon in half and twist ends to make a circle. Sew the ribbon between the two halves of the hat brim using overcast stitches around the outer edge of the brim.

Step 6

Sew the first row of the hat brim to the turning ridge at the brim's inner edge.

Cowboy Vest

Step 1

Ch 44 at lower edge of vest back. Sc in second ch from hook, sc to end. Ch 3, turn. Double crochet (dc) in each sc. Ch 3, turn.

Work even on 44 dc until back measures 10 inches from beginning.

Step 3

Sl in first three sc to shape armhole. Ch 3, dc to last three stitches. Ch 3, turn. Dc in 38 dc. Work even on 38 stitches until piece measures 16 1/2 inches. Break yarn.

Ch 25 for left front of vest. Sc in second ch from hook. Sc to end. 24 stitches. Ch 3, turn. Dc to end. Work even on 24 dc until piece measures 10 inches.

Step 5

Sl in first 3 stitches. Ch 3, dc to end. Ch 3, turn. Dc in 21 stitches. Work even until piece measures 15 inches, ending at armhole edge.

Ruffled Crocheted Cowgirl Skirt

Step 1

Starting at waistband, ch 10. Turn. Sc in second ch from hook and in next three sc. Ch 1. Skip 1 ch. Sc to end. Ch 1, turn. Working in back loops only, sc in 3 sc. Ch 1, skip ch 1 space. Sc to end. Repeat last row until waistband measures 24 inches. Do not break yarn.

Join ends of waistband with sl stitch in each stitch.

Step 3

Ch 3. Working along bottom of waistband, dc in end of each row. Ch 3. Do not turn. Work 1 dc in next 6 dc. Work 2 dc in next dc. Continue working in rounds, increasing one dc every 7th dc until skirt measures 11 inches from waistband.

Step 4

Work 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in each dc around bottom of skirt to create ruffle.

Step 5

Cut a piece of waistband elastic to fit child's waist. Sew ends together. Fold skirt waistband at ch 1 row, fitting waistband elastic inside. Sew waistband closed.
