How to Use Rit Dye

  • Rit dye

  • Bowl

  • Wooden spoon

You can spruce up last years styles and faded clothing by dying it in new and vibrant colors. Dying your own clothing is easy with products such as Rit dye. Rit dye is available in discount and grocery stores and comes in a large range of colors. You can use Rit dye on most washable fabrics with good effect. Rit dye is available in both liquid and powder forms. The simplest method is to use your stovetop for your dying project.

Step 1

Fill a large pot with hot water. Use 3 gallons of water per pound of fabric to be dyed.

Dissolve one package of Rit powder in 2 cups of hot water per 3 gallons of water. Add the dissolved powder to the pot of hot water. If using the liquid version, pour it directly into the pot. You will need 1/2 bottle of liquid dye per 3 gallons of water.

Step 3

Wet the clothing in hot water and add it to the pot of dye mix. Heat the dye until it is simmering.

Step 4

Simmer for 30 minutes. Stir constantly with a wooden spoon or a paint stirrer.

Step 5

Rinse the fabric in cool water until the water runs clear. Wash in warm water with a mild detergent and machine or line dry.

Tip

Rit makes a denim dye that will make old jeans look new again. Liquid Rit can be used for spot dying on damaged fabric.

Warning

Clean the pot immediately with chlorine bleach to avoid staining.
