How to Make a Cowboy Hat with Paper

Things You'll Need

  • 3 Pieces of Newspaper

  • Masking Tape

  • Brown Tempera Paint

You may think that paper crafts are only for kids. After all, a paper hat would never come close to looking like the real thing, right? Wrong. This paper cowboy hat will fool the best of them, and it's surprsingly easy to make. With just a few pieces of newspaper, some masking tape, and some paint, you'll have a cowboy hat to be proud of.

Step 1

Put three pieces of newspaper over your head.

Have someone press down the edges over the sides of your head. Have them put masking tape over the newspaper around your head. The tape should be in a circle from your lower forehead, just over your ears, and around to the back of your head.

Step 3

Repeat Step 2, so that there are two layers of masking tape.

Step 4

Remove the hat base from your head. Use the edge of your hand to press on the top of the hat to form the cowboy hat's crease.

Step 5

Roll the longer edges of newspaper on the sides of the hat. towards the middle, and hold it there with a strip of masking tape. Then roll the shorter edges towards the middle and curve them so that the brim of the hat is rounded.

Step 6

Paint the hat with brown tempera paint. The paint will take a long time to dry, but the hat will harden.

Tip

If you do not have someone else to wrap the masking tape around your head, you can wrap it around a platic container that is the same circumference and height as your hat should be.

Warning

Wear a smock or an old shirt while painting. Although tempera paint is washable, it may leave light stains on some fabrics.
