Add a little bit of modesty to a sweetheart or plunging neckline with a few simple low- or no-sew tricks. The simplest solution to a revealing neckline is to wear a camisole, tank top or tube top underneath the clothing. However, sometimes the under apparel is a little too revealing or you would just like a more permanent solution. Use scarves and modesty panels to make a low-cut dress more modest for a demure family function or other event.

Step 2

Slide one end of the scarf through one armhole and the other end through the other armhole.

Step 3

Bring the ends of the scarf in front of the shoulder straps and back to the center of the clothing. Slide the scarf ends under the section of scarf on either side of the pins at the center.

Step 4

Cross the ends of the scarf over to the opposite armholes.

Step 5

Wrap the ends of the scarf around the shoulder straps to the back of the dress. Pin the ends of the scarf to the straps.

Step 6

Sew the pinned sections of the scarf to the dress.

Homemade Modesty Panel

Step 1

Try on your bra and measure the distance from one shoulder strap to the other. Add 1 inch to this measurement. Try the dress on over top of the bra and measure from the bottom center of the neckline to the height you would like the modesty panel. Add 1 inch to this measurement.

Step 2

Draw a rectangle on your choice of fabric according to the above measurements and cut out the panel.

Step 3

Fold over 1/2 inch of fabric along three sides of the panel. Leave the bottom edge of the panel so that it stays as flat as possible underneath the clothing. Sew a straight stitch along each of the folds.

Step 4

Try on the bra again. Arrange the modesty panel over your chest at the height you would like and pin the sides of the panel to the bra straps.

Step 5

Remove the bra and panel and sew a straight stitch along the straps to attach the panel.

Tip

For a removable modesty panel, cut six pieces of 1/4-inch wide elastic. Make each piece about 1 inch long. Fold two pieces in half and pin one to either side of the top of the panel. Pin one piece to either side of the bottom of the panel. Pin one more to the center of the left and right sides of the panel. Sew the ends in place. To wear the panel, unhook the straps of the bra and slide the straps into the loops on either side of the panel. Reattach the bra straps.
