Charmander is a lovable monster from Nintendo's Pokemon, a Japanese cartoon world that includes a TV show, trading cards and video games. Charmander, which means fire lizard, is discovered and taken in by the main character, Ash Ketchum, after being abandoned by his owner. Charmander later evolves into more advanced lizard forms, such as Charmeleon and Charizard. For Halloween and costume parties, Charmander is an easy Pokemon costume that you can make with a few simple materials. He is a small orange lizard with a light yellow chest and bluish-black eyes. The most distinctive feature is the flame at the end of his tail.

Creating the Flame and Tail

Step 1

Cut a length of tulle fabric, approximately 27 inches long. Bunch the fabric together and cut the top of the bunch so it appears uneven and ragged. Wrap a thick red rubber band around the base of the fabric so it holds together. Fan and fluff out the top.

Step 2

Spray the tulle fabric with red and yellow spray paint to make it look like a flame. Set the tulle aside on a sheet of newspaper and allow it to thoroughly dry.

Step 3

Cut a thick strip of squishy white foam approximately 20 inches long and 3 inches wide. The foam will serve as Charmander's tail.

Step 4

Place the tail piece on the leg of a pairs of orange sweatpants. Cut fabric from the sweatpants that is half an inch longer and twice as wide as the foam strip.

Step 5

Sew the fabric so it completely covers and encases the foam strip. Before sewing both ends of the tail shut, place the rubber banded section of tulle fabric flame inside the top of the tail. Sew around the tulle so the flame is encased within but also sticking out of the tail.

Step 6

Sew the tail onto the butt of an uncut pair of orange sweatpants.

Finishing your Charmander Costume

Step 1

Draw two large eyes in the chest of a white T-shirt using blue and black markers. Having a picture of Charmander to reference will help you get the eyes right.

Step 2

Cut the eyes out from the white T-shirt. Sew an eye onto each side of the hood on an orange sweatshirt, close to the front of hood.

Step 3

Cut a large oval shape out of yellow felt to cover the majority of the chest area on the orange sweatshirt from top to bottom. Sew the felt onto the chest of the sweatshirt.

Step 4

Try on your costume. Pull the sweatshirt hood up over your head. Because you are working with a sweatshirt that is too big, the hood should cover most of your head and hang down, shielding some of your face.

Step 5

Add the finishing touches to the costume by wearing orange tennis shoes and orange gloves.

Tip

Take your costume one step further by cutting four small teeth shapes from the white squishy foam. Sew the teeth to the four inner corners of the top and bottom of the sweatshirt hood.

Warning

Always work with spray paint outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
