You do not have to spend an outrageous amount of money on a work of art. Instead, make your posters look like authentic paintings by creating the illusion of a canvas with Mod Podge. Mod Podge is used in a variety of crafting projects. It dries clear and is ideal for adding texture to slick surfaces such as posters.

Step 1

Lay a piece of cardboard on a flat surface. Place your poster on top of the cardboard. The cardboard must be larger than the poster. Trace around the poster onto the cardboard with a pencil.

Step 2

Pick up your poster, and set it aside. Cut out the tracing from the cardboard. Set the excess cardboard aside. Place your cut out cardboard back on the table. Put the poster on top of the cut out cardboard. The cardboard should be the same size as the poster. Cut the cardboard down until it measures the same size, if it's too big.

Step 3

Remove the poster. Brush the cardboard with Mod Podge, covering the entire surface. Carefully place your poster on top of the cardboard, and smooth the poster down from the center to the outer edges. This eliminates any air bubbles from the Mod Podge.

Step 4

Brush Mod Podge over the poster -- applying it in even, vertical strokes. Apply another layer of Mod Podge in even, horizontal strokes. This creates a canvas effect on your poster. If your poster is a painting reproduction, apply the Mod Podge in the direction of the original brushstrokes.

Tip

Let your poster dry thoroughly before putting in a frame or hanging.

Another way to create a canvas effect with Mod Podge is to apply it over the poster, and place a thin piece of canvas over it. Carefully press the canvas down on the poster, and then lift up. The canvas imprints its texture and creates a canvas look on your poster.

Warning

Work quickly when using Mod Podge. If yours dries too fast, wait for it to fully dry before applying another layer.
