How to Starch Clothes With Cornstarch

Cornstarch is not only a key element to many recipes, it has numerous household uses as well. One of the easiest is to starch clothing. Instead of buying spray starch or sending all those shirts to the cleaners every week, you can mix your own starch with just cornstarch and water. You can also starch large items or large groups of items to the stiffness you choose by using a simple cornstarch mixture.

Things You'll Need

  • Cornstarch

  • Water

  • Bucket

  • Spray bottle

Dipping Solution

Step 1

Mix ½ cup of cornstarch with 1 pint of cold water in the bucket.

Boil water, 2 quarts for heavy starch, 4 quarts for medium starch and 6 quarts for light starch.

Add the boiling water to the first mixture.

Step 4

Dip the clothing in the water and let dry.

Step 5

Sprinkle clothes with warm water and iron as usual.

Spray Starch

Step 1

Mix one tablespoon cornstarch for each pint of water.

Step 2

Pour mixture into a spray bottle.

Shake the bottle well before using.

Spray onto clothing as you iron. The goal is to dampen the clothing, not to soak it with water.
