Smoked salmon is a nice addition in egg dishes or spread over bagels and cream cheese, but storing leftovers might be confusing. Whether hot-smoked or cold-smoked, salmon can be safely stored in the refrigerator or freezer.

Hot-smoked salmon has a slightly higher longevity than cold-smoked salmon. You can safely store it in the refrigerator for one to two weeks. With cold-smoked salmon, you should use it within three days.

You can prolong the life of your smoked salmon by freezing leftovers for up to one month. Simply place small amounts in plastic freezer baggies and defrost as needed.

To defrost frozen smoked salmon, place your baggie in a bowl in the sink and run a steady stream of cold water over the salmon. The fish defrosts quickly so keep an eye on it.

Canned Salmon

If you buy canned smoked salmon, your unopened cans will be safe indefinitely in a cupboard. Once opened, consume within three days.

If you are unsure of the variety of smoked salmon you have, check the packaging label. Hot-smoked salmon should be labeled as such; lox is cold-smoked.
