You can add a zipper to a basic binder.

A zippered binder is a type of portfolio that can be zipped closed to keep the contents inside protected. Students use zippered binders for classes, and office personnel use them for reports or important presentations. You can customize a plain binder with a zipper feature in a short amount of time as a great organizational craft project. Plus, you only need a few basic materials and tools to get the job done.

Step 1

Purchase a plastic binder with 1-inch rings at an office supply store. The 1-inch spine width of the binder will ensure that the open edge around the border will be 1-inch thick.

Step 2

Spread 2-feet of fabric flat on a table. Lay the binder open across the fabric and trace its outline onto the fabric using a pencil. Cut around the traced image on the fabric, leaving an extra inch around the drawing to allow you to wrap the fabric around the binder edge's.

Step 3

Wrap the fabric around the binder, wrapping the excess fabric around the edge of the binder to its inside. Secure in place with a line of hot glue.

Step 4

Measure the three open sides of the binder. Use a measuring tape. This measurement is the length you will need for the zipper.

Step 5

Purchase a zipper that matches the length of the three open sides of the binder combined. Zippers can be purchased at a craft or fabric store. Make sure the zipper has a 1 1/2-inch width.

Step 6

Glue the fabric edges of the zipper to the inside edges of the binder, so the zipper wraps around the three sides.
