Draw drips and create ghastly effects to your artwork.

Drawing dripping paint is a way to make any picture or painting stand out. Paint drips add depth and texture to any drawing. Whether you are drawing letters, animals or objects, adding a dripping paint effect will add character to your work. Drawing dripping paint is a great technique to use when drawing Halloween pictures or letters. You can use the technique to look like dripping blood or slime. Drawing drips can be done in several ways, but remember that drips always fall downwards, so for every drawing follow the same technique.

Step 1

Draw five different shapes onto your sketch pad to experiment with the different drips you can draw. Draw one large round circle, a 2-inch straight line, an oval, a single letter and a square. Make sure each shape has enough space underneath it so leave about 1 1/2 inches between each shape.

Step 2

Sketch lightly using a pencil from the bottom of the circle, four straight lines. Try drawing two 1 1/4-inch lines close together and then leave a gap before drawing another 1/2-inch straight line, and draw a final 3/4k-inch line at the edge of the bottom of the circle. Follow the same technique for each of the shapes when drawing lines, and always be sure to make the lengths and spaces of the lines variate. This will make the drips look more realistic.

Step 3

Use the lines that drop down from each shape as guidelines to draw your drips. Around each line draw a teardrop shape that is drawn skinny at the top and then bubbles out at the bottom of the line. Draw each drop a different size and in between the defined lines, continue along the bottom of the shape with a wiggly line.

Step 4

Fill in the blank spaces between your drops with more paint drips. Draw separate teardrop shapes that look as if they have just fallen from the shape. The drops will not be connected to the drawn lines but fall separately.

Step 5

Erase the faint pencil lines and color in the dripping paint with one color. At the end of each drop, on the right side, leave a shade of white to create the effect of reflection bouncing off of the drips.

Tip

Try adding dripping paint drawing techniques to other drawings and see all the different effects you can create. Don't go over the top with your drips. Drawing too many drips will make the dripping effect look unrealistic.
