Installing a metal roof on a RV is no different than installing a metal roof on any other type of roof with the exception that the RV is not sloped. This will make for easier installation, but will follow the same basic steps. Metal roofs are less expensive and easier to install than the more commonly used shingle roofs. They are less time consuming and with a few instructions you can have that old metal roof removed and the new one put up in its place.

Step 1

Pull the old roof up with a pry bar. Begin on one corner of the RV and work up and down to the other side. Pull up carefully to remove the screws that are holding the roofing in place.

Step 2

Inspect the roof and remove any debris that may remain from the old roof. Check to make sure the roofing felt that was underneath the metal roofing is still intact. Make sure all the staples are in place and it is in good shape. This felt will act as a water barrier to help keep moisture out of the RV.

Step 3

Attach one-by-four furring strips over top of the felt, spaced out 24 inches on center. Line up the furring strips and hammer in a nail every 12 inches up each board. Continue until there is a board every 24 inches across the roof. Attach eave flashing along the bottom perimeter of the roof. Line up the flashing and cut it to size with tin snips if necessary. Hammer in a nail every six inches down each piece to attach them to the edge of the roof.

Step 4

Line up the first metal panel so it overhangs the eave by about 3/4 of an inch. Attach the panel to the roof by drilling in self-tapping screws through the metal and into the furring strip. Install one every 12 inches up the furring strip. Set the second panel next to it and overlap by one ridge. Attach the second panel the same way the first was installed and continue in the same manner down the entire roof.

Step 5

Inspect the area to make sure there are no gaps between the roofing panels and ensure everything is secure to the roof. Check for screws that may be sticking up. Carefully climb down the ladder.

Warning

Always be extremely careful when working on a ladder.
