Make your own Tunisian crochet hook to create afghans and pillow tops.

Most crafters have an assortment of hooks, needles and other paraphernalia. However, sometimes you don't have the exact size of crochet hook you need and your local yarn shop may not carry one of the right gauge or length. By putting your crafty skills to use, you can make your own Tunisian crochet hook after a trip to the store and a bit of rummaging in your kitchen drawers. These are so easy that you may decide to make one in every gauge you ever need.

Step 1

Determine the size of the Tunisian crochet hook you need. Take a metal one of the right gauge with you when you go shopping for a wooden dowel of the correct size. Go to a local crafts or home supply store and find the section where the wooden dowels are displayed.

Step 2

Once you've bought the dowel you want, take it home, lay it on a flat surface, measure the length you want your finished hook to be and mark that spot with a marker. Use the hacksaw to cut off one end.

Step 3

On the opposite end, notch the dowel with the small craft knife to create the hook portion of your tool. Smooth the rough edges as much as possible but don't stress out making it perfect.

Step 4

Use the fine-grit sandpaper to finish shaping the rough hook you created in the last step. When it is perfectly smooth, turn your attention to the rest of the dowel, sanding gently to obtain a satiny finish.

Step 5

Glue the dowel finial (or even a wooden bead of the correct size) to the sawed-off end of the dowel. Let the craft glue dry thoroughly for several hours or overnight.

Step 6

Rub the waxed paper along the length of the dowel, around the hook you made and over the wooden finial. Apply a bit of pressure and keep rubbing until the entire Tunisian crochet hook is free of any rough spots that could catch your yarn.
