Air plants are super easy to care for. No wonder they're so popular! Plus, soil is unnecessary, so you can display them in just about anything. Why not use what you already have? With this easy project, you can upcycle eggshells into charming holders. Once you add an air plant, it'll look like a pineapple. It's too cute. To make your own, check out this step-by-step tutorial.

Things You'll Need

  • Eggshells

  • Bright yellow paint

  • Hot glue gun

  • Paint brush

  • Bronze, brown, or black marker

Tip

To prepare eggshells for this project, crack open eggs at one end. Rinse and leave to dry. The opening doesn't have to be perfect, and all of the eggshells don't have to look alike. As long as most of the shell is intact, you're good to go. You can collect them over time or all at once. (Homemade quiche, anyone?)

Tip

Start with more eggshells than you actually need. They're vulnerable to breakage during the following steps.

Step 1

Paint the eggshells yellow. Stand each one on scrap paper, open side down. If it keeps rolling over, break off pieces from the opening to level it out.

Step 2

To make "feet," add four dots of hot glue to the bottom of each eggshell. They should form a square.

The goal is to place each dot right where the shell starts to curve into the bottom. It might seem tricky at first, but after a few tries, it's easier to figure out.

Tip

If you need to redo a "foot", wait until it is totally dry then carefully peel it away. Be gentle.

Step 3

Now, it's time for the fun part. Using the marker, draw diamonds on the eggshell. Again, be careful. You can practice on paper before doing the real thing.

Step 4

Continue until the entire eggshell is covered with diamonds. Don't be afraid to go over the lines for an artsy, sketched look.

Step 7

To take it up a notch, use dashes and dots. Each set of dashes can form a diamond, with a dot in the center.

Step 8

Continue until the whole eggshell is covered.

Step 9

Insert an air plant into each eggshell. If an opening is too big, some air plants might fall through. Play "musical chairs" until each air plant is paired with the perfect egg shell. To look like a pineapple, it should sit comfortably on the opening.

You don't have to copy these designs. Let your imagination run wild, and don't be afraid to experiment. The potential patterns are endless.
