Building Plans for a Loft Home

A loft floor plan is about as open a floor plan as you can get. Lofts are usually situated directly under a roof, in an upper story, in a basement, in an old building, above a garage or in an attic. A loft home often has an open design, usually with an upper area that is open to the lower area. The upper area is often used for sleeping, reading, or sitting, or as a library, studio or storage area.

Garage Lofts

  • Lofts above garages can range in size from 28 feet wide by 24 feet deep to 40 feet wide and 22 feet deep or larger, and feature a garage on the bottom floor and an open layout above.

Other loft plans feature a garage on the main floor and then an open space to one side of the garage that can be converted however you choose. Lofts can pack all the essential elements of a house, such as a bathroom and kitchen--into a small space that is efficient and inexpensive. If you are just starting out and need a place to live while you build your home, start with a garage and loft, using it as an apartment. Later, the loft can become your guest room.

Home Lofts

  • Loft style housing was first introduced by starving artists who had to live in their studios because they could not afford to live elsewhere, but now lofts are acclaimed for their efficiency and the nearly endless possible uses for the space.

Lofts are especially popular in cities, where there is not a lot of space to live. In city loft plans, the kitchen may flow into the living room which flows into the dining room, and it all seems spacious because it is open.

Lofts are also handy in vacation homes. Many such lofts are on the second floor and open on one side so you can see down into the area below. Lofts in vacation houses provide a bonus room to be used as desired and keep the house plan open and airy.

Loft style home plans can also refer to living spaces that were converted from an industrial building to a residential one. These tend to have an open layout. The only enclosed room with four walls is the bathroom; the rest of the floor plan is completely open and may include an upper bonus area, usually used for sleeping.
