Adding a deck to your home can be a simple weekend project when you use a do-it-yourself deck kit. These kits contain everything you need to install a deck in the design that you choose with the materials that will coordinate with your home. Take a few steps before the arrival of your deck kit and everything will proceed smoothly.
Before ordering your deck kit, you should consult with your local government to acquire the necessary permits. Check the local codes to make sure that the kit that you plan to install is up to code. You will need the plans for the deck kit to get your permits, though.
Measure the area that you have available for your deck. Deck kit companies design the deck according to your specifications and measurements. Consultants may be able to help you choose the best design for your home as well. Most deck companies have a selection of deck designs and the ability to design one specifically for your home. Choose the best materials for your deck needs. Wood that has been pressure treated with a preservative will last a great deal longer than non-treated wood.
Installing the Kit
The deck kit comes with instructions for easy installation. Make sure that you have some help when building the deck. It is possible to install the deck kit on your own, but it is safer to have help when lifting heavier pieces of the assembly.
The deck kit will come in multiple pieces along with all of the hardware that you will need to install the deck and attach it to your home. Follow the instructions carefully when installing the deck. At the minimum, the tools you will need to install a deck kit are a hammer, wrench, screwdriver, post hole digger, shovel, cordless drill and a tape measure.
Finishing the Deck
When the deck is completed, it will need to be finished. Deck sealers protect the wood from water damage and come in clear coating or a colored finish. Sealers are also available as a penetrating protection or as a surface coat. Both protect the wood equally well although some believe that wood is better protected with a penetrating sealer.
Do not seal the deck in direct sunlight or in colder weather. Make sure that the deck is completely clean before applying the sealer.
