Small Kitchen Cabinet & Countertop Ideas

Adding new life to your small kitchen may just be what the cook ordered. One way of doing this is to redo your kitchen cabinets and countertops. Don't bother calling a contractor to do the work for you. Most of this type of renovation is easy enough that almost anyone can do it. All you have to do is decide what you want to do with your kitchen cabinets and countertops, and then get to work.

Countertop Surfaces

  • Change the surface of your countertops. Try granite, marble or slate when operating on a large budget. These options are thick and take up valuable space between your counters and cabinets, which can keep you from having small appliances on your counters. Hiring a contractor for this would be your best option unless you have experience installing counters. For smaller budgets, try laminate that imitates the look of more expensive options. Try using self-adhesive laminates used as flooring. These are thinner and take up less space. Remember to use solid colors or simple, large patterns to make your counters look larger.

Cabinet Colors

  • Paint or stain your cabinets. Use soft, light colors to add the illusion of spaciousness to your small kitchen. Try faux painting techniques to add visual interest, dimension and depth to your cabinets. Stencil designs on your upper cabinets to draw the eye upward, making your ceiling look higher.

Counter Storage

  • Add storage to your counters. Use canisters in complementary colors to store food items. Remove the lids and use them to store and display cooking utensils such as wooden spoons and spatulas. Add small racks near your stove so they will be within easy reach as you cook.

Pulls and Hardware

  • Use simple door and drawer pulls, and other hardware such as hinges on your cabinets. Keep these simple, avoiding large, bulky and overly-ornate pulls and hardware so your kitchen looks less cluttered.

Additional Cabinets

  • Add more cabinets to your small kitchen. Place prefabricated ones, available at home improvement stores and some discount stores, on bare walls to create more storage space in your small kitchen. Paint or stain the new cabinets to coordinate with the rest of your kitchen cabinets.
