If you need more room but don't have the budget to build an addition to your home then why not consider converting your garage?
Your garage has the basics already in place -- existing foundation, four walls, roof, concrete floor, wiring and framework! Attached or detached garages can offer you some great options. Here are some ideas to revamp that interior garage space.

The Choices are Endless

  • More and more homeowners are turning that garage into something else entirely. Home improvement stores, remodeling services and many construction companies are now offering garage conversions, consultations and plans and materials to convert that garage. Garages, in general, can offer a minimum of 200 to 400 sq feet of additional space. Converting that garage is typically less expensive than building a new addition onto the house.
    Here are some ideas to consider:

    1. Extra bathroom
    2. An in-law or rental apartment
    3. A media room
    4. A home cinema, complete with snack bar, juke box, etc.
    5. Extra storage

    7. An office, study or library
    8. A studio or hobby room

  • Whatever you decide, keep in mind the existing structure (flooring, wiring, plumbing). Adding these elements can weigh heavily on your budget. But if you already have a laundry area in your garage, then converting the space to an extra bathroom or apartment may be easier than you think, since you already have the plumbing.
    You may only want more room to organize, add new cabinets, shelving, bins, or add more storage place for yard equipment, tools, an extra refrigerator or deep freeze. Even extending the kitchen or creating an additional bedroom can be done by utilizing the existing garage. A home office is also very popular.
    Whatever your decision, you should consult with a professional and create a plan. Depending on where you live, zoning laws may apply, so check with your local building inspector and the zoning commission regarding your conversion.

  • It is vital to get the proper plans (the bigger the conversion the more critical to your success) to make this a seamless conversion. A local builder specializing in smaller construction jobs may be able to offer you ideas and plans that you haven't even thought of. Should you replace those garage doors with entry doors or windows? Floors and sub-floors may need to be built. Are the walls insulated? And what about heating and cooling? Detached garages can offer an entirely separate set of challenges.
