Do it Yourself Roof Repairs

Roofing is no easy task to tackle when repair come calling. Years ago, when a roof needed repairs, the homeowner would call out a roofer, he would come and give a costly estimate, and then, in his own sweet time, repair the roof. Nowadays, the homeowners have formed a revolution in which they have eliminated the roofer from the process and completed the job themselves. Roof repair can be completed by the average homeowner with little or no learning curve. The job is straightforward and can be completed in as little as 2 hours.

  • There are a few tools necessary when repairing a roof. You will need a ladder for reaching the roof, a hammer, a pry bar, tape measure and a razor knife.

Clean Up

  • Remove the damaged wood and roofing materials completely before attempting to repair. Many times you will need to go all the way down to the rafters by removing the shingles, tar paper and plywood. Remove the plywood in whole pieces. In other words, if the damage is only 2 feet by 2 feet, then go ahead and remove a whole 4-by-8 section.

  • Nail the new sheet of plywood into the rafters using 8 penny nails. Replace the felt paper by lapping the new over the old by about 4 inches and securing with felt nails. Reshingle the damaged area by following the old rows of shingles and tying them back together. Do not leave any nails exposed.
