If a prefabricated vanity doesn't seem right for your bathroom, use your imagination and create a vanity from scratch that will fit your style. Otherwise known as the cabinet underneath your bathroom sink, the bathroom vanity is used to store a wide range of items. While you're deciding on an object to use to create your bathroom vanity, keep in mind what your storage needs are and how you use your bathroom space.
For a more modern take, add a bit of industrial style to your bathroom by using a metal cabinet or two to create your bathroom vanity. Pick up a large metal cabinet from a retail store or check out an old school item sale to purchase a few old short lockers to create your bathroom storage space. If you prefer an open look, install open metal shelving in a style that fits your decor.
Convert a Dresser
If you have an old dresser just laying around in the basement, convert it into a bathroom vanity. Longer, short, waist-high dressers tend to work best for a vanity conversion project, so your vanity is the right height for use in the end. You can update an old dresser that's seen better days by sanding down the dresser, applying wood fill to any gouges and adding a new coat of paint or stain. New hardware also can go a long way to make an older dresser look like a new vanity.
Build Your Own
To fill a small or unusual size space, build your own bathroom vanity from scratch. Use cabinet-grade plywood to make the vanity, then add a coat of paint or stain to get the look you want. For a more elaborate look, add pieces of crown molding in a style you love to doors or outer edges. Install drawer pulls and handles last to complete the look.
