If you can't decide whether you want a patio or a deck outside your home, combine the two to make a space that suits all your needs. You can create a deck or patio of almost any size, depending on your initial space, and a combination deck and patio is no different.
To add visual detail and spice up your space, add multiple levels to your patio and deck combination. Add a concrete or brick patio at ground level. Then, build either a raised deck or one closer to the ground. For a zen-like effect, place a single platform deck in the middle of a larger patio, or build a series of connecting platform decks framed by a larger tile or brick patio. If you're building a deck straight off your house, create a deck with stone or wood steps to lead down to a patio space.
Make a Connection
If the area you have for your outdoor project is spaced out or you have a large yard, create a variety of different patios and decks spaced throughout your yard. Then, connect each section with a stone patio walkway or a basic deck path, providing ample opportunity for relaxing or entertaining. For an unusual look, include both multiple levels and connecting pathways in your deck design to create a more complex and detailed deck that will be sure to wow the neighbors.
If you're an outdoors lover only some of the time, invest in an indoor patio space, such as a three seasons porch, which connects to a deck. When you open the door to your patio to step outside, step onto your deck. You can create an indoor patio close to or far from your deck. For a different take, create a three seasons patio porch upstairs or on your roof and create steps leading down to your deck. Switch the idea and create a rooftop deck that leads right into a three season porch patio.
