Fence Ideas for a Backyard

Save

Fencing your backyard can give you a feeling of safety and security. It protects your family from prying eyes and provides a physical boundary between you and your neighbors. It can also help to keep young children and family pets from wandering off and getting into trouble. Fencing always involves trade-offs, however; a backyard fence that provides privacy will also block your view. A backyard fence that provides security will not look as attractive as an ornamental one. Consider your fencing needs carefully to choose the backyard border that is right for you.

Picket Fence Yard and Garden

  • Create a unified theme for your backyard with a picket garden and picket fence. Build orderly, rectangular garden beds with picket-fence-style borders and straight, paved paths between them. Then surround your backyard with a picket fence in a similar style. Your wooden picket fence will give you privacy and a measure of security while also serving as a decorative border for your garden.

Rustic Fences

  • If you prefer a rustic look to your backyard fence, install a split rail fence. Split rail fences are a traditional style used by farmers and ranchers to contain livestock, but have caught on with many homeowners because of their simplicity and rugged appeal. There are several split rail fence designs, but they all use a layer of two or three long, rough wooden rails meeting every several feet at primitive vertical posts or junctions. They are easy to assemble and give your house a clear boundary without obstructing the view. On the downside, they do use a lot of wood.

Vinyl Fence

  • Unless you want a solid metal security fence, consider getting a vinyl one. Vinyl fences come in a wide variety of colors and styles, and many feature realistic imitation wood texture. Vinyl fences are dyed all the way through, not painted, which means the color will not come off like it can on metal and wooden fences. Vinyl fences are easy to snap together and do not rot like wood or rust like some styles of metal fences do. They are also easier to maintain, and will typically clean with nothing but a spray of water from a hose.
