Wall Bed Ideas

A wall bed, also known as a Murphy bed, folds up against or into a wall. William Murphy designed these beds more than one hundred years ago to create a comfortable place to sleep, but still be able to entertain guests. These beds are popular in small studio apartments, where space is limited, or in homes, where a home office doubles as a guest room.

Wall Bed Sofa

  • This wall bed saves space by serving as a sofa during the day and a bed at night. Some even have a shelf to display or store items. The bed folds up vertically against the wall with a frame holding it in place. A small couch, complete with a horizontal shelf, rests against this folded-up bed. To use the bed, pull the shelf toward you as you lower the bed. Once the bed is in position, the shelf rests underneath on two legs.

Wall Bunk Beds

  • Wall bunk beds come in handy when guests or younger family members visit. Wall bunk beds look like a king-sized Murphy bed folded horizontally against the wall. When folded up, a long horizontal slit separates the two beds. To pull down the bottom bunk, stick your hand through the middle opening and pull the bed out and down. From this position, you can easily pull the top bunk out and down or leave it up, using the bottom bunk as a day bed or lounge.

Wall Bed and Table

  • The wall bed and table is another suitable way to save space. The fold-out table fits one or two people. It can also serve as a desktop. Fold the table up before pulling the bed downward for sleeping. Alternatively, pull the table away so it rests horizontally when the bed is folded upward. Some versions have a mirror on one part of the table.
