Update a ranch style home with architectural features.

Ranch homes were a popular style in the 1970s and '80s. While these older homes often look outdated, a little remodeling can give a ranch home a modern feel. Assessing the space and layout of the home is the first step to planning the remodel. The remodeling budget is another important consideration in the renovation plan. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Take Down Walls

    • Many older ranch homes feature individual rooms rather than the more modern open floor plan. Taking down non-load-bearing interior walls to create an open feeling updates the old ranch. The open, airy feeling also makes the home seem larger, because there aren't as many walls dividing the space. Creating a more open concept with the kitchen, dining room and living room is the most common option in renovating a ranch home.

    Add Architectural Details

    • Many older ranch homes lack architectural details both inside and outside. Adding your own details makes the house more visually pleasing while adding your own personality to it. Decide on a general decorating style. Whether you choose a modern style, rustic look or a more formal design, think about details that would enhance this theme. For a modern home, you might add a slate tile fireplace with a minimal mantle. Columns lend a more traditional look to a home. Consider adding architectural details to the outside of the home, as well. Add a wrap-around porch to the front or raise the roof line and add dormers.

    Master Suite

    • Older ranch homes aren't likely to feature a master suite as do newer homes. Create your own master suite during the remodeling process. If the master bedroom is large enough, take some of the space to create a master bathroom and walk-in closet. For smaller master bedrooms, expand into another bedroom or add an extension on to the house. Creating a master suite adds a more modern, updated feeling to the older home.

    Windows

    • Installing new windows gives the older ranch an update both inside and outside. New windows add a clean look to the home. Newer windows also generally open and close better than older windows. And new windows provide more energy savings than older windows, particularly if the older windows are drafty. Choose a style of window that fits the overall look you want to achieve. Add shutters to enhance the windows even further.

    Expansions

    • An expansion to the current ranch floor plan adds more functional space, allowing more flexibility in your decorating. If you have enough land available, you can expand the ranch outward. This maintains the ranch feel while adding square footage. If you want a completely different look and feel to the home, consider expanding upward. Adding a second story to a ranch is a large undertaking that requires professional contractors to handle, but it adds space and visual interest to the home.
