The Best Color Scheme for Pink-Tiled Bathrooms

Pink-tiled bathrooms are a throwback to the past; they were all the rage in the 1950s. Your vintage bathroom may even sport pink fixtures to match. With the artful use of color, you can tone down the pink based on your personal decorative style, whether it's contemporary, cottage, Victorian or even Parisian, which includes elements that are both classical and traditional.

Colors That Go With Pink

  • Pink – red tinted with white – sits opposite a green tinted with white on the color wheel. As a complementary color, a sea-foam pale green offsets the pink tile. Orange, pink and salmon include red in them, which makes them optional colors that go with pink, but these may be overpowering in a bathroom if they're not offset by a lighter color on the walls. Other colors that work with pink include metallic gray, brown, black, taupe, white and beige.

Crisp Cottage Style

  • For a cottage-styled bathroom, paint the walls in a crisp white and add white fixtures -- pedestal sink, toilet and claw-foot tub -- if there’s room in the budget. Hang white curtains made from an eyelet-embroidered fabric on the window with soft pink ribbon tiebacks matched to the tile color. From the towel bars, hang thick white Turkish cotton towels and add a white bath mat on the floor in front of the tub. Above the pedestal sink, hang a large mirror in a distressed white frame.

Contemporary Bold Choices

  • Although pink isn’t really a contemporary color, modernize the bathroom and downplay the pink by choosing a metallic gray color scheme with black accents. Paint the walls in metallic gray; hang white towels with black horizontal bands to towel racks and paint the window trim in white. A live green leafy plant like a dracaena adds a touch of complementary green to the mix, silver shower curtain matched to a window treatment in the same color fabric gives the bathroom with a more contemporary feel. For a bold choice, paint the walls black and add metallic accents to the room.

Pink Romance

  • Romantic Victorian color schemes for a pink-tiled bathroom include a washable wallpaper in gray and white that features repeated florals. If you don’t mind the busyness, opt for a Victorian wallpaper in black and white or with touches of pink in the flowers set against a beige background. Turn a thrift-store dresser or buffet into a vanity and paint it crisp white with light pink trim after adding a drop-in white porcelain sink. White lacy curtains as a window treatment offer a match to the shower curtain.

The Look of Paris

  • For an authentic Parisian bathroom, add a bidet alongside the toilet and paint the walls a soothing light gray, cream or linen. Turn a white cabriole leg dressing table with gold-gilded accents into a vanity by adding a glass bowl sink atop it or install a white Parisian pedestal sink instead. Above the sink hang a white and gold-gilded ornately carved mirror. A shower curtain in soft pale pink or white with black Eiffel towers scattered on it matches lotion bottles, soap dispenser and tissue cover with the same Eiffel tower imprint. Roll thick large white towels and set them in a see-through black wire basket near the tub.
