What Are Good Kitchen Colors?

Save

The kitchen is almost always the heart of any home, making the decor especially important. A welcoming atmosphere is essential. Since kitchens have less wall space than other rooms, the wall color is sometimes more an accent color than the main color. Colors for the walls must match or coordinate with the color of the cupboards, counter tops and appliances, so there are many variables to consider.

White and Neutrals

  • A white kitchen is seen by some as the ultimate in cleanliness, a desirable characteristic in a kitchen. However, stark white is very cold to the eye. For the walls, a warm white or a neutral, such as taupe or cream, fades into the background while allowing more vibrantly colorful counter tops, cabinets, appliances, floors, and furnishings.

Yellow

  • A yellow kitchen is warm and inviting. A kitchen that does not receive much natural light would benefit the most from yellow. Take your time while choosing a yellow for walls or painted cabinetry. Select a yellow that is a shade duller than what you think you want. Paint chips are tiny, and yellow tends look much brighter when it is on the walls. Blue accents are a classic match with yellow.

Red

  • Red, from a psychological point of view, is believed to stimulate the appetite, making it a good choice for a kitchen. It is, however, a very strong color, and is used most effectively on walls in kitchens where there is little wall space or as accent color. Red looks spectacular with stainless steel appliances or as an accent with neutrals.

Blue and Green

  • Fresh food comes from the earth, and thus colors of the earth are right at home in a kitchen. The cool, restful colors of blue and green work well in kitchens that have a sunny exposure. A blue kitchen looks gorgeous with accents of chocolate brown and a splash of orange. Green complements neutrals, and dark red accents add character.
